As Henry Anatole Grunwald once said: ‘Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault’. If you love writing, then journalism is certainly the career for you. Journalism is a fantastic career as you are able to write about new and different things each day. You are also given the opportunity to interact and meet new people on a daily basis.
In this line of work you have to meet strict deadlines as people require news 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a demand for news and journalists are the ones who have to acquire the news stories. At times, journalism can be a stressful career, however it is such a worthwhile career. The stress is all forgotten as soon as you see your name in print. Ask any journalist and they will tell you that there is no feeling that compares to when you see your article has been published. This is one of the reasons which drew me to the career of journalism. As a writer I want people to read my work and be informed or entertained. We live in a world which is surrounded by media and news. There will always be a need for journalists as people constantly want to know what is happening in the world.
Journalism is a career which branches out into many different areas. Through studying Journalism and Media at University I am able to move into area of the media industry. Through my degree, I have taken part in work experience at a local newspaper. It was a fantastic opportunity which gave me a unique insight into how a local newspaper operates. Through my time I also had a number of articles published. Studying journalism at university level will give you the knowledge and skills that will enable you to succeed in the world of journalism. However it is also important to try and acquire as much work experience as possible. It will provide you with first hand experience and it will also ensure that you stand out from other graduates when potential employers look at your C.V.
As a student journalist, it is also crucial that you develop and improve your writing skills. Through my time studying journalism, I have had a number of articles published. They have been published in newspapers, magazines and also on websites. It has enabled me to improve my skills as a writer. I have also created a portfolio of my articles in order to show employers. If you have a certain hobby, then write about it. Try and get your articles published in as many areas as possible. It will also provide you with the opportunity to make contacts in the industry and may lead to work experience or employment. As a journalist it is important to develop your skills as a writer. You will achieve this through publishing your articles. Employers will also be impressed to see that you have had articles published in various places. Studying journalism at university level is also important as it provides you with the foundations and knowledge to become a journalist.
Journalism is a career which touches the lives of people everyday. The 24/7 news headlines come from journalists who go out and find stories. Newspapers are published everyday featuring stories written by journalists. If you think you have the desire and motivation to succeed as a journalist, then journalism is the perfect career for you.
